Garden State Dance Project
We exist to cultivate the art of dance in the Garden State through performance and education.
GSDP began as an actual “project”. That project was and continues to be to fuse dance genre’s of urban movement such as hip-hop and break-dance with fine art forms such as ballet and modern in a multi-media context. GSDP has performed at many venues in the tri-state area such as Merce Cunningham Dance Studio, Grounds for Sculpture, Seton Hall, Montclair State, Wheaton University as well as The SWEAT Outdoors festival to name a few. In the words of Robert Johnson of the NJ Star Ledger, their piece Be Still “the most vivid dance of the festival”. Click the link to see a video of their newest dance piece, Chiaroscuro.
With the performance company now on hiatus, the project has shifted to developing quality arts education programs for the up and coming dancer. They provide instruction at their two studios, school day residencies as well as after school and assembly programs. Click on Dance Teaching Artist tab above to see more about their educational programs.
“In an effort to keep things earth shattering” and to never cease in pushing artistic boundaries, GSDP has teamed up with Souljerz Crew (seen below). They dance with their “soul” and are also from New Jersey so hence the name Souljerz. Led by Carlos Cordova (A.K.A. Ironman 360) current Souljerz (seen below) perform, instruct and compete throughout the country & abroad. Souljerz and GSDP collaborate on several educational projects / choreographic aspirations. More to come!
